Stories In Service: Day of Neighborhood Storytelling started in 2009 in response to the local media’s sensationalization of stories about violent crimes in Philadelphia’s urban neighborhoods.
Teams of storytellers head to neighborhoods across the city on the same day at the same time to saturate the city with positive tales that help to build and restore cultural identities in communities. Each gathering represents a neighborhood village where participants interact through call and response, song, movement and rhythmic expression in the context of storytelling. This year’s Storytelling Day of Service will be on September 22nd. The day will be documented and broadcasted (Comcast 66 and Verizon 29), generating positive media in each neighborhood.
The project is currently fundraising asking community members for $10 to help make this year’s event happen. Learn more and contribute on GRIOTWORKS’ website.
