In preparation for this panel I’m speaking on next week about Master of None I’ve been reading Aziz Ansari’s Modern Romance. I was expecting a comedic biography, was was excited to find that it’s actually a partnership with a sociologist to understand not just our shifting concepts of romance, but also how we communicate and use technology. So far, I love it.
I also watched comedian Ravi Patel’s documentary Meet the Patels which was recently added to Netflix streaming. It pairs nicely with both the dating episode of Master of None and Modern Romance and is an interesting exploration of how the institution of marriage is changing across cultures.
Totally unrelated–other than maybe that it’s also about the search for love–I’ve been watching New Girl (past seasons are available on Netflix streaming). I’m not a Zooey Deschanel fan, at all (though I do secretly wish I could have bangs like hers). As a result it took me a while before I gave the series a chance. Now it’s one of my favorite contemporary explorations of puncturing social constructions of masculinity with humor.
